Check Out "Bullitt"

For the San Francisco-philes out there, you will definitely want to check out the movie "Bullitt" starring Steve McQueen.

I thought it was awesome to see my (newly adopted) city circa the 1960's! I had just gotten off the #1 Muni before watching this movie, and I was blown away to see some of the intersections I passed through right there on the screen, but shot 40 years ago!!! Wow!

So, "Bullitt" has been in my Netflix queue for a while, but it was just serendipity that I recently saw a LaughingSquid post that tells of a Steve McQueen fan geocoding the car chase scene. That is a great work that fits in nicely as a complement to the movie.

I have one last question: Did anyone else notice that the hero didn't even pull his gun out of its holster until the very end of the film? Tres cool!

I Are A Mac Convert

About 2 years ago I decided I needed to upgrade my laptop. I was on an old Dell 1100 (?) series, but Dell's customer support and quality control had plummeted in user satisfaction so there was no way I would even consider one of their boxes. I had a friend who was a very big Mac proponent who offered to help me wean myself off of Windows and ease myself into the Mac world, which was one of my biggest personal benefits. (Thanks Chip!) Also, they had released the MacBook Black, which suited my Gothic aesthetic sensibilities. So, the deal was done.

Since then, I have come to enjoy the Unix-like capabilities of the Mac, coupled with its FANTASTIC multimedia capabilities. As an all-in-one box (both development and entertainment), my MacBook has served me well.

Now that I am ready to spread out my digital home footprint, I am planning to buy a Mac Mini to serve as my home multimedia server and DVD player. This will free up a bunch of more space on my current MacBook, extending its useful lifetime for me.

While plotting my new Mac Mini purchase, I've been looking into resources for using a Mini in such a way. I have found the following links to be potential sources of info to aid me in my home Mini entertainment needs...

My New Apartment

Since my housemates in Colorado bought me out of my share of the house, I have been trying to figure out what I want to do about my housing situation. Though, 225 Hyde isn't too bad (for me, because the bums leave me alone because of my 'scary' appearance) I decided I wanted a change of scenery.

I was considering buying a condo somewhere in SF, but since I tend to be more transitory, owning property seems like it would be a bigger problem than a benefit. (Also, check out this article which analyzes lost opportunity cost.)

So, today I signed a lease on a very nice apartment in the "Tender Nob" and Van Ness areas. It is about 1200 sq. ft., and it is a 2-story loft flat on the 12th and 13th floors.

So, via a weird confluence of link sharing, I found the website AplusD.net.

AplusD is the website of the "mashup" duo Adrian and the Mysterious D. These two DJ's seem to have been on the front of the mashup club scene. This duo also DJ's the club Bootie in San Francisco, which I've never yet made it to... Though, after hearing some of their mixes, I might have to try it out!

While I was walking by the Phillip Burton Federal courthouse today, I saw a fantastic sight. Some people had decorated a street post to look like a giant flower.

It's silly and funny shit like this that makes me love this town!
